Culture and Customs

Adventure Sports; Hang gliding and Paragliding can be undertaken by the more adrenaline focuses gappers and volunteers at a nearby town called Bir-billing. This is recognised as one of the best places in to world for these sports with 180km flights achievable! Bir Billing is about 30kms away from Palampur. Trekking is another hugely popular thing to do here due to the amazing surroundings and there are many local guides who can take you on week long excursions into the beautiful hills. One particularly attractive trek takes you through the Sanghar pass, through Holi to Bharmaur. If you are brave enough to venture out in the winter you will be able to go skiing at nearby resorts as well. If you are into fishing you can hire rods and a guide to take you to the best spots.

Crafts in Palampur and in the surrounding villages and towns add a very interesting aspect to your gap travel. You can visit famous pottery, woodwork, metalwork, spinning and weaving workshops. The workshops give you the chance to purchase beautiful crafts to remind you of your gap year in India whilst supporting the local economy.

Festivals and Culture

Sair is the festival local to the Kangra valley and originates from times before the proper bridges and roads. In a location so full of rivers and streams it was very hazardous trying to navigate the terrain and this festival signifies the offset of the dangerous rainy season. People worship the Shair deity by offering crops, fruit and vegetables and children play a game with walnuts.

The food you will eat here is similar to that of the rest of Northern India and usually has a base of lentils, rice, vegetables and bread.
