    TRIP DESCRIPTION

    Your journey with a purpose will begin in Dharamshala, the spiritual capital of the state Himachal Pradesh. Dharamshala attracts many visitors each year as the home of Dalai Lama and all the Tibetans in exile. Dharamshala’s main attraction is the Dalai Lama Main Temple, but the city is rich with Tibetan culture and history which is showcased in the Tibetan Museum. Dharamshala is also famous for it’s breath taking views of the Himalaya’s.

    Your community engagement project will be based in Palampur, a beautiful hill station located in Kangra Valley in Himachal Pradesh, about 35 km from Dharamsala. Palampur is famous for it’s tea gardens and is also regarded as one of the Tea Capitals of India as it produces the famous Kangra Tea. Palampur is also famous for its colonial-era architecture and beautiful temples. The picturesque landscapes of Palampur is another famous attribute of the town. With its pleasant climate all year around, you’ll have the opportunity to visit the region’s many streams and brooks, providing a beautiful natural landscape with the Himalayas always in the background.

    During your time in India, you’ll have the opportunity to make an impact contributing to education, health and livelihood programmes within the community. You’ll be supporting our partner charity, the FutureSense Foundation, working towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals and working to build a brighter future for disadvantaged communities around the world.

    You’ll also have the opportunity to explore some of the world famous sights of India by exploring the Golden Triangle. You’ll begin your travels in Amritsar to see the Golden Temple and explore the colourful markets. You’ll then travel via train to Delhi where you’ll have the opportunity to explore Old Delihi before transferring to Agra where your 6 weeks in India will end with a visit to the Taj Mahal!

    Drinking water and all meals will be included in your programme. However, if you choose to travel during your free time at the weekends, meals will not be included.

    All in country transport required for your programme and project activities will be included. Transport is not included if you choose to travel during your free time at the weekends but our overseas team can advise you on this.

    Accommodation is included throughout your programme (except if you choose to travel independently during free weekends). You will stay in a local hostel/ guest house and share with 3-4 other gappers.

    Activities

    Community Engagement Project

    Working with our partner charity The FutureSense Foundation, you will be making a sustainable impact contributing to our Social Impact, Health and Climate Action projects. You’ll spend 5 weeks leaving your handprint in Palampur. Our main focus in India is supporting 100 students and 200 community members on projects including STEM, English, Climate Action, WASH, Nutrition & Sports, Women’s Health, physical, social and emotional wellbeing support. This means that when you visit India, you will be able to contribute to long term programmes and see first-hand the work FutureSense Foundation do. Ahead of your departure, you will receive a full project briefing with information on your project and how you can prepare.

    Cultural Exchange

    You’ll have plenty of opportunities to explore the rich culture in India. You’ll have the opportunity to explore Palampur, Dharamshala and neighbouring areas- soaking in the beautiful scenery and learning about Indian culture.

    Golden Triangle

    Your final week in India will be spent seeing some of the world famous sights in the Golden Triangle. The Golden Triangle is the route between Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. You’ll explore Amritsar, the spiritual and cultural city of the Sikh Religion and your first stop will be the Golden Temple, the holiest shrine of the Sikh religion. You’ll then board the train towards Delhi, and have the chance to explore Old Delhi with a visit to Raj Ghat, Mahatma Gandhi's memorial. Your next stop will be Agra, to visit the impressive Agra Fort and then the spectacular Taj Mahal. Your last stop will be a city tour of Delhi where you’ll have a chance to grab any last minute souvenirs.
