    TRIP DESCRIPTION

    Take on a journey with a purpose and make an impact in the Scared Valley. Your 6 week programme will allow you to explore the very best of Peru whilst contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, working with our partner charity The FutureSense Foundation to build a brighter future for disadvantaged communities around the world.

    Touchdown into Cusco where your journey will begin. Cusco is a city in the Peruvian Andes, which was once the capital of the Incan Empire. Today, Cusco is a UNESCO world heritage site and known for its archaeological remains and Spanish colonial architecture.

    Your community engagement project will be based in Urubamba. Located near the Urubamba river, about an hour away from Cusco, Urubamba lies 2,871m above sea level in the heart of the Sacred Valley. The Sacred Valley is a region in the Andean highlands, containing some of the best lands in the region and is home to colonial towns and isolated weaving villages.

    During your time in Peru, you will also have the opportunity to trek to Machu Picchu, also known as The Lost City of the Inca’s, is one of the seven wonders of the world! Machu Picchu is an Incan citadel set high in the Andes Mountains in Peru, above the Urubamba River valley. The panoramic views from Machu Picchu are spectacular. For many, Machu Picchu is considered the most spectacular urban creation of the Inca Empire and one of the most important heritage sites in the world.

    Drinking water and all meals will be included in your programme. However, if you choose to travel during your free time at the weekends, meals will not be included.

    All in country transport required for your programme and project activities will be included. Transport is not included if you choose to travel during your free time at the weekends but our overseas team can advise you on this.

    Accommodation is included throughout your programme (except if you choose to travel independently during free weekends). You will stay in a local hostel/ guest house and share with 3-4 other gappers.

    Activities

    Community Engagement Project

    Working with our partner charity The FutureSense Foundation, you will be making a sustainable impact contributing to our Social Impact and Climate Action projects. You’ll spend 5 weeks leaving your handprint in the sacred valley. Our main focus in Peru is supporting 700 students from local schools on projects including STEM, English, Climate Action, WASH, and Physical, Social and Emotional Wellbeing support. You will be delivering workshops at our partner schools where Ahead of your departure, you will receive a full project briefing with information on your project and how you can prepare.

    Cultural Exchange

    You’ll have plenty of opportunities to explore the rich culture in Peru. You’ll have the opportunity to participate in a Sacred Valley tour and visit and the Inca citadels of Pisac and Ollantaytambo. You’ll also be able to explore the colourful markets with traditional handicrafts, visit a rural potato farm, and also participate in language lessons!

    Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu

    Your final week in Peru will be spent taking on the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu. The 5 day trek will test your endurance, reaching 4600m above sea level as you reach the summit of Salkantay Mountain. The awe-inspiring views will keep you going as you pass the unbelievable Humantay Lake and finally reach the lost city of Machu Picchu on the final day of the trek.
