Anton Valley in Panama is home to some unique and lesser-known spots that are worth exploring during your gap year. Whether you’re interested in butterflies, hiking, waterfalls, or orchids, this area has something for everyone. Join our Climate Action volunteer, Ben, as he shares his favourite hidden gems in and around Anton Valley that are worth a visit.
Butterfly Haven
The Butterfly Haven is in Central Anton Valley. It is a wonderful place to immerse yourself in hundreds of butterflies. The whole place is set in a rainforest setting. The staff will also explain how the butterflies hatch.
La India Dormida
The hike is a short walk from where the volcanic crater was in Anton Valley. Many local Panamanians come here on weekends to get away from the busy city and explore the surrounding landscape.
The Cerro Cara Iguana Hike
This hike is along much of the crater, but once you make it up to the point on the top with the cross, it makes it all worth it – especially at sunset, as the views are breathtaking.
Chorro Macho
This is a 35-meter waterfall, and at the bottom is a natural lagoon where you can swim for a small cost. If you want, you can also explore some of the small hiking trails that surround the area.
Aprovaca Orchid Centre
This is a nursery that has 100 different types of orchids on view, most of which are native to Panama. What makes this place special is that it is one of the few places where you can see the National Flower of Panama, the Holy Ghost Orchid.
