Volunteering in Panama
Programme Overview
GapGuru Panama brings together adventure, cultural immersion, and meaningful impact. You’ll be based at our hub in El Valle de Anton, supporting the FutureSense Foundation with long-term sustainable development projects.
During your time at our hub, you’ll run activities with local learners across various Impact Areas. You’ll also support wider community sustainability efforts by helping out at the local recycling centre. You’ll be supporting sustainable change in the community, contributing to long-term development and meaningful progress.

Induction
Your first few days in Panama will be filled with opportunities to immerse yourself in the local culture and learn about the FutureSense Foundation. You’ll start with an introduction toEl Valle de Anton and receive a comprehensive health & safety briefing. We’ll also introduce you to some basic Spanish phrases and give you insights into the work being done in the community. It’s a fantastic chance to bond with other participants and the local team you’ll be working with over the coming weeks!
Project Delivery
From Monday to Friday each week during your project delivery, you’ll be based at our hub in El Valle de Anton. With guidance from your GapGuru mentor, you’ll help inspire change in the Impact Areas you have selected by engaging local learners in diverse activities and taking part in community projects. This is a crucial part of our ongoing, sustainable programme, where you’ll build upon previous students’ work and be part of facilitating lasting change in our communities.
Adventure Week
Our Adventure Week usually takes place on week 5 of your programme however this can be subject to change. Your full programme itinerary will be confirmed in your briefing pack at least 6 weeks before departure.
Weekends
You’ll have your weekends free to venture out and explore some of Panama’s diverse natural wonders from volcanic islands like Taboga Islana, Pozo Azul waterfalls and where the jungle meets the ocean in Playa Venao.
Our Impact Areas address key global issues, promoting long-term positive impact and sustainable development in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The FutureSense Foundation Panma team are based in El Valle de Anton. As the newest hub they’re working to set up community engagement projects in rural areas of El Valle de Anton and working with local NGO in the Azuero peninsula to offer long-term, sustainable solutions to development.

When you visit Panama you will be part of something bigger. You’ll be involved with setting up long-term programmes and get to see first-hand the work FutureSense Foundation do.
During your programme you will be staying in local accommodation. All the rooms are dorm style shared with other participants. All rooms are next to bathrooms which have western-style toilets, hot showers and a sink.
There is plenty of space for you to relax in your spare time, including a courtyard and a large outdoor space.
The accommodation is safe and regularly cleaned with plenty of spaces for you to relax in your spare time, however the amenities aren’t the same standard that you might be used to.
Meals
All of our meals are served family-style and are vegetarian to ensure that we can provide you with safe food and also reduce our carbon footprint. You’ll eat a lot of the local cuisine which is delicious across the board!
Breakfast
Breakfast is simple and consists of cereal, toast, spreads, fruit, coffee/tea.
Lunch
Lunches will consist of vegetarian dishes based on local ingredients and traditional preparations.
Dinner
Dinner will consist of vegetarian dishes based on local ingredients and traditional preparations such as empanadas and lots of rice and beans! To give you a taste of home the team might even sneak in the odd western dish like pasta.
