Volunteering in Tanzania
Programme Overview
On a GapGuru Tanzania programme, you’ll be part of something bigger as you make a difference and become immersed in the local culture. Based in Arusha, you’ll work closely with our partner, the FutureSense Foundation, to make a sustainable impact.
During your time in our hub, you’ll work closely with local learners in your chosen Impact Areas helping to drive sustainable change in the community.
Our Adventure Week is your perfect introduction to travel. Combining adventure with relaxation as you enjoy a safari exploring Tanzania’s wildlife, followed by pristine beaches and vibrant culture on Zanzibar Island.

Induction
Your first few days will be packed with opportunities to immerse yourself in the local culture and learn about our work in Tanzania. You’ll explore Arusha on a guided walking tour, enjoy a welcome dinner, and get a rundown on health & safety. You’ll also have a cultural orientation, including an important Swahili language lesson and an introduction to the FutureSense Foundation. It’s a great chance to bond with your fellow travellers and the hub team you’ll be working with over the coming weeks.
Project Delivery
From Monday to Friday each week during your project delivery, you’ll be based at our hub in Arusha. With guidance from your GapGuru mentor, you’ll help inspire change in the Impact Areas you have selected by engaging local learners in diverse activities outside the traditional classroom structure. This is a crucial part of our ongoing, sustainable programme, where you’ll build upon previous students’ work and be part of facilitating lasting change in our communities.
Adventure Week
Our Adventure Week usually takes place on week 5 of your programme however this can be subject to change. Your full programme itinerary will be confirmed in your briefing pack at least 6 weeks before departure.
Weekends
You’ll have your weekends free to venture out and explore some amazing places like Arusha National Park, home to Mount Meru and diverse wildlife. The vibrant city of Arusha, with its lively markets and cultural experiences, is a must-see.
Our Impact Areas address key global issues, promoting long-term positive impact and sustainable development in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

In Tanzania, we work hand-in-hand with our charity, the FutureSense Foundation to ensure our programmes are long-term and sustainable. Our work is focused in Arusha where the FutureSense team live and work in the community year-round. We support local students and community members, working on projects related to Education, Health, Clean Water, and Sanitation.
The foundations work in Tanzania is guided by the main challenges they have identified, focusing on education and the provision of infrastructure for clean water and health promotion.
This means that when you visit Tanzania, you be contributing to long-term programmes to benefit the local community and see first-hand the work FutureSense Foundation do.
During your programme, you will be staying at You’ll be staying at our volunteer house or local guesthouse. All the rooms are dorm style, so you will be sharing with 3-4 other team members in bunk beds. Each room has a shared bathroom with Western-style toilets and showers.
The accommodation is regularly cleaned and safe, however, the amenities aren’t the same standard that you might be used to. Be prepared for things like putting toilet paper in a bin rather than flushing it and having cold showers (which is refreshing because it’s so hot!).
Meals
All of our meals are served family-style and are vegetarian to ensure that we can provide you with safe food and also reduce our carbon footprint. You’ll eat a lot of the local cuisine which is delicious across the board!
Breakfast
This will be simple and consisting of toast, fruits & occasionally eggs. There will be coffee and tea.
Lunch
Lunch will be taken either back at your accommodation or you will have a packed lunch to eat at your project site.
Dinner
You will have dinner at your accommodation, and dishes such as Chips Mayai (French Fries Omelette), Mchicha (spiced greens), and Ndizi (plantains with spicy tomato sauce) will feature on your menu showcasing a blend of African and Indian flavours. Come prepared to eat a lot rice and various vegetables. There will also be familiar options such as pasta, French fries and pizza.
